Join us for an exclusive five-day wildlife photography workshop set amidst British Columbia’s breathtaking Discovery Islands. Led by Jamie Kinney, a seasoned wildlife photographer, this workshop promises an unforgettable experience at what is arguably the best location in the world to photograph bald eagles.
We will spend five days exploring this majestic area via boat as we observe and photograph hundreds of bald eagles each day. Participants can also expect to see orcas, humpback whales, dolphins, steller sea lions, grizzly bears, black bears, and more!
Lodging, guided excursions, meals, drinks, and optional evening classes and photo critiques are included in the cost of the workshop.
Dates: July 15-19, 2024
Location: A beautiful lodge located in the Discovery Islands North of Campbell River, British Columbia. Enjoy beautiful sunrises and sunsets as you hear eagles calling to each other.
Cost: $5,400 USD + 5% tax per person
Confirm your spot with a deposit of $2,500 + tax with the remainder due 60 days prior to arrival
Prior to the trip:
I will offer a one-on-one video chat to learn more about your photography objectives, discuss what gear to bring, and answer any questions you might have.
During the workshop:
We will take boat excursions each day to photograph hundreds of bald eagles that gather each year to feast on fish brought to the surface by tidal upwelling. Our boat will be piloted by experienced local guides who are skilled at helping us find and photograph eagles, humpback whales, orcas, grizzly and black bears, dolphins, sea lions, and other wildlife.
Photography enthusiasts of all skill levels
Nature lovers keen on capturing the beauty of wildlife in their natural habitat
Anyone seeking an immersive photography experience in a stunning, remote location
Camera equipment and lenses. I recommend bringing a 100-500 (or similar) telephoto zoom lens and a wide-angle lens. Be sure to bring your charger, extra batteries, and memory cards. I also recommend bringing a second camera body if you have one.
Laptop to store and process your photos and videos
Sunglasses and sunscreen
A hat to protect you from the sun while we are on the boat. I recommend one with a strap that will prevent it from flying away.
Clothing for a range of temperatures that you can wear in layers. The weather is beautiful this time of year and some people are comfortable wearing shorts and t-shirts. However, it can get cold on the boat and you will want long pants and a jacket to keep warm as we travel between locations.
Large telephoto prime lenses like a 600 f/4 as they are are heavy and bulky. The eagles fly incredibly close to us and it would be difficult to compose your shots with these lenses.
Tripods are not necessary and would be difficult to use in the boat. For those who would like to try their hand at landscape or astrophotography, there will be a tripod available at the lodge.
Enjoy views of the Pacific Northwest as you fly via seaplane from Kenmore, Washington to the island where you will arrive at the dock in front of the lodge. We will then settle into our rooms before enjoying a group lunch as we get to know each other.
After lunch, we will head out on our first boat excursion to photograph the eagles as they gather by the hundreds to feast on pacific hake that have been brought to the surface. Once the eagles have had their fill and your memory cards are full, we will return to the lodge for appetizers before we enjoy dinner and drinks in the lodge’s dining room overlooking the water.
After an early breakfast, we will head back to the boats for a morning outing in which we will look for bears foraging near the shore at low tide. It is likely that we will see dolphins, seals, sea lions, humpback whales, or orcas while we are on the water.
We will return to the lodge for lunch and to give everyone a chance to swap batteries and memory cards before heading out once again to photograph the eagles as they enjoy their afternoon feast. After dinner, those who are interested can participate in photography critiques and editing sessions.
After breakfast, we will enjoy another morning exploring the Discovery Islands as we search for the diverse wildlife of British Columbia before returning to the lodge for lunch and a break.
In the afternoon, you can join us for a hike to a nearby lake where we may see eagles bathing or you can relax at the lodge. After the optional hike, we will return to the boat for another afternoon on the water photographing the eagles.
After waking up early to enjoy the sunrise and a delicious breakfast at the lodge, we will search for whales, dolphins, bears, and other wildlife.
Following lunch, we will return to the boats for another eagle photography session as they pluck hake from the nearby tidal rapids. With the setting sun, we will return to the lodge for our final group dinner and an opportunity to reflect on our time together.
We enjoy an early breakfast together before heading out on the boat for one last opportunity to experience British Columbia’s wildlife and natural beauty. We will then return to the lodge for lunch before boarding our flight back to Seattle.
This area offers some of the best salmon and halibut fishing in the world. For those who are interested, we can add an optional guided fishing expedition for an extra fee. Catch salmon and halibut and have your first shipped home!
